Demurrage & delays — FAQ

What is demurrage?

Demurrage is the charge a carrier or terminal applies when your container stays at the port beyond the free days — usually because of a documentation or customs hold. Rates escalate the longer the cargo sits.

How does a missing waiver cause demurrage?

Without a valid cargo tracking waiver (ECTN/BESC/CNCA etc.), customs will not release the cargo. It sits at the port accruing demurrage and storage until a valid certificate is presented.

How can I avoid demurrage?

File your cargo tracking waiver before the vessel arrives — ideally before it departs the load port. A GetCTN waiver is validated in 3–6 hours, so your cargo clears without a documentation hold.
